Guns in the classroom?

Guns in the classroom?!  I realize that my opinion may be different from yours, but let me explain!

I am all for the right to bear arms.  In fact, I am planning (and have been for a while) to take some lessons and get my carry permit.  As a single mother living alone I want to have one for our protection.  I want to have one in my car for when I'm out alone at night.   The truth is I hope the gun alone would scare someone off because a knee cap is a small target! :)

But, let's talk about the reasons NOT to have a gun in my second grade classroom!
  1. I am NOT a trained police officer or security guard!
  2. I have excellent control of my classroom, but what IF a child were to get a hold of a gun!?
  3. If  we (the good guys) know that there are guns in the classrooms, won't the bad people?
I am here to teach our children.  I would do ANYTHING  I needed to do in order to keep them safe, but I am not trained to handle the bad guys.  There are people that are trained to do that on a daily basis - let's get those people in our schools!  I realize this is going to cost money, but is the security of our children and teachers worth it?  I believe so!

My classroom is very well behaved.  I keep control of my classroom at all times.  Discipline is NOT an issue for me.  (I know what some of you are saying - "Yeah, but she is in a private school!  She wouldn't be able to do that in a public setting!"  YES, I believe I would!)  But still, what IF a student were to get a hold of a gun?!  Can you imagine the outcome?  Kids are curious and, given the opportunity, they WOULD play with a gun. And I'm talking about elementary kids here; I shudder to think of what could happen if a disgruntled middle or high school student were to get a gun in their hands!  Yeah, NOT GOOD!!!!!!!!

Now, let's think about this for a minute!  Does it really make sense to go ahead and have a gun in a classroom for the bad guys to come in and demand!?  REALLY? It sure sounds like we are setting ourselves up for disaster!  What if a man/woman were to manage to sneak in a building (I mean, come on. . .they no longer have to sneak in weapons - they could be disguised as a ANYBODY and get in the building!) and then take over a teacher and get the gun?  Couldn't that happen!?  I'm not a strong person and a man could easily force me to hand over a gun!

I WANT to find a way to keep our kid's safe, but  placing guns in the hands of teachers is NOT the answer!  (Of course, this is just my opinion!)
